Metal Roofing Service Long Island, NY Built For Salt Air And Wind

Metal is the longest-lasting roof most Long Island homeowners will ever put on a house, and it is also the one people understand least before they call. Bluemaster Roofing installs standing seam aluminum, 26-gauge steel panel and stone-coated steel shingle systems across Nassau County, Suffolk County and Queens. Which one belongs on your house depends on how far you sit from salt water and what the roof has to look like from the street. We tell you that during the inspection, including when the honest answer is that metal is not the right spend.

When Is Metal The Right Call For Your Roof?

Metal earns its cost in two situations. The house sits somewhere exposed, on the water or on the forks, where conventional roofs have aged early. Or you are staying twenty-five years or more and would rather buy one roof than three. Outside those, the math gets harder to justify, and we will say so.

If you already have a metal roof, these are what we get called out for:

The Real Comparison

You are not comparing two roofs. You are comparing one against three.

Metal costs more on the day. That part is true and we are not going to talk around it. What changes the picture is looking at the same fifty years for both.

The part people forget until it happens

That second replacement does not arrive at a convenient moment. It arrives roughly twenty-five years from now, and it is not only a cost. It is finding a contractor again, taking days off, and living with two days of tear-off noise at whatever age you happen to be.

Labor is also the part of a roof that rises fastest, faster than material. Whatever a replacement costs today, the one after it will not cost the same.

None of this makes asphalt a bad roof. It is the right answer on most Long Island homes and it is most of what we install. But if you are planning to stay in the house, or the roof is steep and awkward to get at, metal stops being the expensive option and starts being the one you only buy once.

Materials We Use

The Three Metal Systems We Install On Long Island

We install standing seam aluminum panels, 26-gauge steel panels and stone-coated steel shingles. Standing seam aluminum is the system for coastal exposure and the one carrying the 50-year material warranty. Steel panel is the economical option for inland structures and outbuildings. Stone-coated steel gives you metal performance with a textured shingle or shake appearance.

The Coastal Decision

Aluminum or steel depends on one thing

A metal roof near the water does not fail the way people expect. The panels are usually fine. What goes first is the smallest metal on the roof: the fasteners, the cut edges, the drip edge and the flashing. Steel gets attacked at exactly those points. Aluminum does not corrode that way at all.

Ocean or bay

Inland

Under 1 mile

Aluminum

No exceptions. Salt reaches every fastener and every cut edge out here, and it works on them year round rather than seasonally.

East Rockaway, Long Beach, Island Park, Freeport, Oceanside, the Rockaways

1 to 3 miles

Aluminum recommended

Salt still carries this far on an onshore wind. Steel will work, but the fixings and flashing become the thing that dates the roof.

Over 3 miles

Either works

Salt is no longer the deciding factor. Now it is budget, panel profile and how much weight the framing should carry.

Coastal choice

Aluminum

What we install within about a mile of open water

In salt air

Does not rust. Aluminum forms its own oxide layer that protects the metal underneath rather than eating into it.

Cut edges

Safe. Every panel gets cut on site, and on aluminum a fresh edge is not a weak point.

Fasteners and flashing

Matched aluminum and stainless throughout, so there is no reaction between different metals at the fixings.

Weight

Lighter than steel, which matters on older framing and on raised post-Sandy homes.

Trade-off

Costs more than steel, and is softer, so it dents a little more easily under impact.

Right for

Waterfront and South Shore homes, the Rockaways, anything on a canal, and any roof where the salt air never really lets up.

Inland choice

Steel

A perfectly good roof once you are away from the water

In salt air

The coating is the whole defence. While it is intact the panel is protected. Where it is broken, corrosion starts.

Cut edges

The weak point. Every site cut exposes bare steel, and near salt that is where it begins.

Fasteners and flashing

Need careful matching. Mixed metals at the fixings corrode faster than either metal would alone.

Weight

Heavier, and stiffer with it, so it resists denting better than aluminum does.

Trade-off

Less expensive, and inland that price difference is real money for no practical downside.

Right for

Waterfront and South Shore homes, the Rockaways, anything on a canal, and any roof where the salt air never really lets up.

We are not going to sell you aluminum you do not need

If your house is in Levittown or Commack, steel is the right answer and it costs less. Within a mile of the water it is a completely different conversation, and that is the one place we will not budge, because we are the ones who come back and look at it in ten years.

Our Process

How A Metal Roof Project Runs

01

Assessment And Honest Answer

We walk the roof, measure every plane, count penetrations and check the deck and attic. Then we tell you whether metal suits this house and which of the three systems fits your exposure, including when the answer is that shingle is the better spend.

02

Specification And Written Estimate

Profile, metal, gauge, finish, seaming method, clip system and hardware all named on the estimate rather than described as a metal roof. Sheathing priced per sheet, snow retention included where it is needed.

03

Fabrication And Installation

Panels are made to your measured lengths and the finish is ordered to your selection, so there is a lead time before install. Then the old roof comes off, the deck is checked and flattened, high-temperature underlayment goes down, panels are set and seamed, and every flashing is formed on site.

04

Walkthrough And Warranty

Magnet sweep, debris hauled out, final walk with you, permit inspection closed, and the material warranty registered before we leave.

Metal suits some Long Island houses and not others. Pick the material that fits the roof shape, the exposure and the budget. We install and warranty all six.

Pricing

What Shapes The Cost Of A Metal Roof

Panel system, metal and gauge, roof geometry, and how much flashing has to be hand-formed matter far more than square footage alone. A long, simple gable is the most economical metal roof there is. A cut-up colonial with four dormers and two chimneys is a different job at the same square count.

System and metal choice.

Stone-coated steel, 26-gauge exposed fastener steel, steel standing seam and aluminum standing seam sit at very different price points, and mechanically seamed costs more than snap-lock.

Metal gauge and finish grade

Heavier gauge resists marking and reduces oil canning. Finish grade decides how the color holds through decades of Long Island UV and salt.

Roof geometry and penetration count.

Every dormer, valley, chimney, skylight, plumbing vent and old antenna bracket needs a fabricated detail. Penetrations are expensive on metal in a way they are not on shingle.

Coastal hardware specification

Stainless and aluminum-compatible clips, fasteners and flashings cost more than standard components, and on a waterfront house they are not optional.

Why Choose Us

What You Get On A Metal Roof Job

Metal is as much a fabrication trade as a roofing one, and the parts that decide whether it lasts are the parts nobody sees once the last panel is set.

One Crew, Start To Finish

The same in-house team measures, tears off, sets panels and forms the flashings. Metal is a fabrication trade as much as a roofing one, and it does not get handed to a sub.

A Specification, Not A Description

Your estimate names the gauge, the profile, the seaming method, the clip system and the hardware. You can hand it to another contractor and get a genuine like-for-like comparison.

We Tell You When Metal Is The Wrong Spend

A repairable flashing gets a repair quote. A short ownership horizon gets an honest conversation about shingle. That has cost us metal jobs and it is still how we run it.

FAQ's

Metal Roofing Questions Long Island Homeowners Ask

Lifespan, cost, noise and solar. These five come up on nearly every metal estimate. If yours is not here, call the office and ask.

How long does a metal roof last on Long Island?

Aluminum standing seam carries a 50-year warranty on the material, and the installation details decide whether it gets there. Stone-coated steel sits in a similar range on inland roofs. Exposed fastener steel panel is shorter, generally wanting fastener attention past year twelve as the washers harden. Coastal exposure does not shorten aluminum’s life the way it shortens asphalt’s.

We do not recommend it and generally will not quote it. Metal telegraphs whatever sits beneath it, so an uneven shingle layer shows through as waviness across the panels. More to the point, a metal roof is a fifty-year commitment to decking nobody has looked at. Tear off first, check the deck, then install.

Yes, upfront. The honest framing is that you are prepaying for a roof cycle rather than overpaying for one roof. Whether that trade suits you comes down to how long you are staying and how complicated your roof is. When you are undecided we quote both, so the gap is a number on paper rather than a sales conversation.

It is the best roof there is for solar. Mounts clamp onto the standing seam rather than screwing through the panel, so there are no roof penetrations at all, which removes the most common leak source on a solar installation. Which goes on first, and how decking life factors in, is covered on our solar roofing page.

Snow sheds readily, which reduces load and helps with ice damming, but it comes off in sheets rather than gradually. Over doorways, walkways, driveways and lower roof sections, snow retention bars are designed in from the start. This is a specification question, not an afterthought.
